Q.) HOW DO I KNOW I NEED TO HAVE MY TRANSMISSION REPLACED?
A.) THERE ARE MANY SYMPTONS THAT MAY INDICATE A TRANSMISSION IS HAVING A PROBLEM OR IS MALFUNCTIONING. SOME THESE SIGNS ARE SLIPPING GEARS, HARD SHIFTS, HARSH ENGAGEMENT, RED FLUID UNDER THE FRONT END OF VEHICLE, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OR A VEHICLE NUETRALS OUT.

Q.) HOW CAN I IDENTIFY SOME OF THESE SYMPTONS?
A.) HERE IS A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THESE SYMPTONS:

SLIPPING GEARS OR SLIPPING OUT OF GEARS MEANS: WHEN A VEHICLE SHIFTS FROM ONE GEAR TO ANOTHER , THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ENGAGE TO THE NEXT GEAR CAUSING THE ENGINE TO REV UP TO THE MAXIMUM RPM SET OF THE CURRENT GEAR. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE MAY SOUND LIKE ITS WORKING HARD, THE VEHICLE DOES NOT ACCELERATE ANY FASTER THAN THE MAXIMUM ACCELERATION SET FOR THE CURRENT GEAR. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE TRANSMISSION DOES NOT ADVANCE OR ENGAGES TO THE NEXT GEAR CAUSING A SLIPPING EFFECT KNOWN AS SLIPPING GEARS, OR SLIPPING OUT OF GEARS.

HARD SHIFTS OR HARSH ENGAGEMENT MEANS: DURING THE COARSE OF SHIFTING THE VEHICLE JERKS EXTREMELY HARD WHEN ADVANCING FROM ONE GEAR TO ANOTHER. THIS HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION AND THE TRANSMISSION JERKS WHEN SHIFTING TO THE NEXT GEAR. THIS IS ALSO HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS NOT IN MOTION. HASH ENGAGEMENT CAN BE FELT OR HEARD WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO REVERSE, REVERSE TO NUETRAL, NUETRAL TO DRIVE, BACK FROM DRIVE TO NUETRAL, NUETRAL TO REVERSE, REVERSE TO PARK. HARSH ENGAGEMENT DOES NOT ALWAYS OCCUR IN THIS ORDER, OR IN EVERY GEAR OR DUING EVERY SHIFT. IN MOST CASES THE DRIVER CAN HEAR OR FEEL HARD SHIFTING OR HARSH ENGAGEMENT AT THE SAME TIME.

RED FLUID UNDER THE VEHICLE: WHEN RED FLUID IS VISIBLE UNDER THE VEHICLE IT DOES NOT ALWAYS MEAN A TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REBUILD. IT IS FIRST IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY WHAT FLUID IS UNDER THE VEHICLE. RED FLUID OR OTHER FLUIDS CAN BE MISTAKELY IDENTIFIED AS TRANSMISSION FLUID. MOST COMMONLY KNOWN VEHICLE FLUIDS ARE: ENGINE OIL, TRANSMISSION FLUID, GEAR LUBE, BRAKE FLUID, POWER STEERING FLUID, ENGINE COOLANT, AND WINDOW WASHER FLUID. WHEN A VEHICLE IS LEAKING TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE LEAK CAN COME FROM VARIOUS PLACES SUCH AS: A WORNED OUT TRANSMISSION PAN GASKET, A CRACKED OR DAMAGED TRANSMISSION PAN, TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES, CRACKED OR DAMAGED TRANSMISSION CASE/HOUSING, SHIFTER LINKAGE, AXLE SEALS, PUMP SEALS, SENSORS, OR OTHER SEALS AND GASKETS CONNECTING TO THE TRANSMISSION. MAINTENANCE, REPAIRS, OR REBUILDING DEPENDS ON THE SERVERITY OF THE LEAK COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION OR ITS RELATED COMPONENTS.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT: NOT ALL MODEL VEHICLES COME EQUIPED WITH A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT SERVICE SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM IS KNOW AS O.B.D.(ON BOARD DIAGNOSTICS). MOST VEHICLES ARE EQUIPED WITH O.B.D. DEPENDING ON THE VEHICLES MANUFACTURED YEAR. MOST VEHICLE CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ARE IDENTIFIED AS A ENGINE MOTOR SHAPED ICON. THIS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM IS USED IN TROUBLE SHOOTING A VEHICLE’S MALFUNCTION. IN THIS DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM MOST MALFUNCTIONS ARE RELAYED AS TROUBLE CODES. THE TECHNICIAN READS THESE CODES TO HELP PIN POINT THE VEHICLES MALFUNCTION. IN MOST MODERN VEHICLES, TRANSMISSIONS ARE ELECTRONIC AND MAY SET THE CHECK LIGHT ON IF THERE IS A MALFUNCTION FOUND IN THE TRANSMISSION. NOTE: (A CHECK ENGINE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE ON FOR A VEHICLE TO MALFUNCTION OR SHOW SIGNS OF MALFUNCTIONING)

NUETRALS OUT: THIS TERM IS USED WHEN A VEHICLE IS NOT CAPABLE OF MOVING FORWARD, REVERSE, OR IS NOT CAPABLE OF MOVING AT ALL. THIS TERM CAN ALSO BE USED WHEN A VEHICLE SHIFTS INTO GEAR AND DOES NOT SHIFT INTO THE FOLLOWING GEARS AT ALL. AN EXAMPLE: MY VEHICLE SHIFTS UP TO 2nd GEAR, BUT THEN NUETRALS OUT AND WONT SHIFT GEARS ANY MORE.
